Puzzled, the man looked at the boy and asked what he was doing. Without looking up from his task, the boy simply replied, “I’m saving these starfish, Sir”.
The old man chuckled aloud, “Son, there are thousands of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?”
The boy picked up a starfish, gently tossed it into the water and turning to the man, said, “I made a difference to that one!”
Parable of the Starfish and inspiration for Starfish Project's name!
Starfish Project believes that each single person that is prevented or rescued and restored from trafficking and exploitation is valuable. They work in locations where it is difficult and other organisations have had to close their anti trafficking operations. But they persist, actively reaching out to exploited women in brothels and outreaching to thousands in the local community.
As a not for profit they offer safe shelter, healthcare, education and childcare to vulnerable women. Their holistic program provides support, counselling and a safe environment for the women to heal and grow. They are a member of the Fair Trade Federation and committed to fair trade practises.
Starfish Project is also a social enterprise, having established a quality jewellery business which has provided employment for over 100 women. It gives the women vocational training in an array of programs and many of the women involved have gone on to become accountants, graphic designers, mothers, wives and business owners and live independently today!
